What Can We See When Complexities Converge?

It’s impossible to effectively navigate complexities when you face them in isolation. Convergence is the act of moving towards a shared, singular point when separate and disparate ideas, groups, or systems blend into one.

Leaders require augmented tools capable of converging complex systems to see, solve, and operationalize de-risked investments, environments, policies, and related decisions.

Complexity theory is a science we are making possible to tackle. The idea that some subjects are too complex or too uncertain to navigate practically is outdated. We now have tools to bring together or converge different subjects, materials, conditions, sectors and forecasts and embrace the sometimes dramatically unpredictable or unanticipated events produced through their interconnections.

In the world where our future meets climate, the urgency to embrace converged complexity is calling RWI.

What Happens When Crises Collide?

The ability to see and understand complex systems is vital for solving the growing reality of polycrises in health and associated sectors.

A polycrisis is a concurrent, layered disruption, the impact of which is greater than the sum of its individual parts. The present Ebola outbreak occurring in the Democratic Republic of Congo at the same time as armed conflict, mass displacement, and weakened institutions is an example of a polycrisis.

Funding is presently being secured for a one-year pilot partnering RWI with the University of Calgary's O’Brien Institute for Public Health, and the Climate Health System Alliance, providing our technology to the Polycrisis Simulation Lab: a new kind of preparedness training environment for healthcare leaders.

“Participants will see how a decision in one sector can produce intended or unintended consequences elsewhere. This will allow leaders to test decisions in a safe environment before a natural polycrisis occurs.”

- Climate Health System Alliance Founder Dr. Bhavini Gohel, O’Brien Institute for Public Health, Cumming School of Medicine, U of C

Instead of rehearsing for a single emergency, participants will navigate compound crises, 6D realistic scenarios where multiple pressures hit at once and decisions have downstream consequences.

"In the world of polycrisis in health, real-world experience as a teacher can be a cost we can't afford to bear. We can now use the best of technology to help us experience the unimaginable and gain the clarity required to navigate all aspects of mitigation.”

- RWI CEO and Co-Founder Myrna Bittner

RWI's health use cases began by modelling the impacts of COVID-19 on energy demand and consumer behaviour for utility members of the Electric Power Research Institute (EPRI) and Phoenix-based Salt River Project (SRP). Today, RWI's platforms are advancing health system sustainability, advancing synthetic populations to augment the study of patient populations, and planning optimization in prevention and primary care as well as technological interventions as part of an international research consortium, PHRESH.

Our partnership with the Polycrisis Simulation Lab brings these innovations together, providing the intelligence decision-makers need to identify vulnerabilities, test interventions, anticipate cascading impacts, and activate resilience before disruptions occur.

"This approach is valuable for us because we currently cannot adequately represent multiple systems and how they interact simultaneously. Synthetic modelling lets us examine causal connections between crises in a way a static, single-scenario exercise cannot."

- Dr. Gohel

When Economic Shocks Become Cascading Impacts

What happens to communities when leaders can’t converge and see the cascading effects of economic shocks?

A rent increase isn’t just an issue related to housing and affordability.

Whether it’s transportation or social services, healthcare capacity or food insecurity, each element exists as part of a highly interconnected system of systems.

RWI recently published work alongside Centraide du Grand Montréal that synthesized and converged the relationships among economic shocks, rent increases, and household populations.

The augmented intelligence generated by RWI’s synthetic twin of Montréal enabled decision-makers to see how a 6% rent increase would thrust more than 30,000 people into financial insecurity across 10 boroughs, identifying which households were affected and where.

Beyond showing how many households move into economic precarity or poverty, RWI’s high-fidelity, 6D models calculate the resulting increases in food insecurity, the number of young people who would be forced into poverty, and the higher rates of both family and sexual violence.

This information enables decision-makers to better see their communities and optimize targeted interventions, proactive deployment of crisis resources and related social services, such as rent relief programs, food security initiatives in high-risk neighbourhoods, and youth supports where child poverty is projected to rise.

Where Climate, Security, and Critical Infrastructure Converge

The growing demand for RUNWITHIT’s capabilities in converging data surrounding climate resilience was underscored during Adaptation Canada 2026, where RWI was invited as a member of the inaugural MaRS Adaptech Accelerator cohort.

Climate resilience and climate-related events are increasingly becoming a matter of national security in Canada. Operation LENTUS, the Canadian Armed Forces (CAF) response to natural disasters in Canada, was activated 31 times between 2010 and 2020, doubling almost every five years.

In recent years, the CAF was involved in 20 separate instances of federal intervention in climate-related emergencies between 2024 and 2026, as rendered in RWI’s Synthetic Canada visualization platform.

Each response to natural disasters diverts resources from training, NATO commitments, and operations related to important deployments, such as maintaining Canada’s Arctic sovereignty.

In addition, the CAF relies on critical infrastructure and equipment that are potentially unprepared for unprecedented impacts, with the NATO Association of Canada writing that “as the climate changes, long-lived infrastructure and equipment assets will face different operating conditions for which they were designed.”

Defence leaders are being asked to see, solve, and operationalize de-risked decisions on climate resilience, critical infrastructure, and energy. RWI's technology integrates complex systems-of-systems and can simulate logistics, disruptions, and failures, providing certainty with precision and speed.

Powering Convergence with INFLECTOR AI

INFLECTOR AI has enabled our subject matter experts at RUNWITHIT to converge, model and visualize quickly, easily, and powerfully, without specialized AI or programming expertise. Now, companies, organizations, and partners can have their own RWI Lab, with the full power of the INFLECTOR AI platform, the same tools that we use every day to unlock valuable insight for our customers.

Behind the scenes, we’ve been working to ensure our technology runs smoothly on consumer-grade hardware, popular GIS and coding tools, and the software our clients use.

We’ve also put the finishing touches on Currents, our solution that gives creators total control of who uses their data, their Holodeck content, and their models, for what purpose, and for how long.

The technology and approach that have enabled us to understand, share, and operationalize transformative insight for our customers are now available for others to fully integrate INFLECTOR AI into the workflows of organizations that need it.

In fact, this next step has already begun with our Synthetic Waterloo Intelligent Futures Technology (SWIFT) Hub, in partnership with Dr. Dillon Browne (University of Waterloo), Founder and Director of FamilyPsycle®.

We’re putting the RWI Holodeck’s live data modelling in the hands of students and researchers on their own laptops, using our Regional Lab model to create a shared space for modelling and discovery.

RUNWITHIT Synthetics works to create visibly better futures by modelling and visualizing interconnected and interdependent systems. The most important of these are our connections with the Land and with each other. Globally, and for time immemorial, Indigenous Peoples have cared for and stewarded the Lands, so that each of us today can benefit from all the gifts the Land provides. We acknowledge the First Peoples who continue to live in kinship with the Land and demonstrate to others the importance of reciprocity, so that we may all create and share in an abundant world. We acknowledge the impact our decisions have on all of our living relatives, past, present and future, and our role in preserving and improving our world for all those yet to come.
